About the Ranch
We started our breeding program in 2003 with one Slater cow that was bred back and the heifer calf she delivered earlier that year. We quickly learned how social longhorns are when they followed us around the pasture watching us rebuild fences and clearing dead limbs. They're still very curious today, whether we're working on a water pump at the trough or burning a brush pile.
We also learned that they aren't particularly fond of dogs when a man brought his dog along one day when he was doing some dirt work for us. We watched as Droopy's Class (aka Georgia) chased his dog clear out of the pasture!!! Although Georgia was showing her protective nature that day, she's one of the most docile cows on our place.
Early on we learned how genuinely friendly and helpful other longhorn breeders were because we asked a lot of questions. Wes and Carol Chancey helped us select our first cows and answered questions about breeding, vetting and feeding. Allen and Suzanne Perry showed us how to brand the first heifers born on our place so we could register them.
Our ranch is only about 20 acres so we raise a small herd of longhorns. However, a small herd allows us to really focus our breeding program on the longhorn basics of horn and conformation. We raise our cattle to be gentle. Our grandchildren are frequently in the pasture and will feed the cows by hand right alongside us.
Even before we considered purchasing our first longhorn, we admired the longhorn's rugged beauty and what it represented: hardiness, determination to survive and flourish, and of course the proud Texas heritage. Whether you want to own a part of Texas heritage, need to preserve your agriculture exemption, or need some Texas pasture art, give us a call. We'll be glad to give you a tour.
